Research summary: The Modified UQ Flap: An alternative for other flaps

This month we look at some skin cancer surgery options. Many of you will be aware of the recent publications of the UQ Flap, and now a further paper have been presented with a Modified UQ Flap, as an alternative to the rhomboid flap.

For many GPs who do skin cancer, moving from ellipse to flaps and grafts can be daunting. Finding good training in the real world with real patients can be challenging. And operating on people is very different from operating on pork parts!

As with many aspects of medicine, developing comfort with a small selection of flaps is a good way to start, and for many of us the rhomboid flap has been a ‘go-to’ flap.

The Modified UQ Flap is an attractive alternative to the rhomboid flap, as shown in the paper and the very helpful video associated with it.

The flap is simpler in concept, sacrifices less normal tissue, and is easier to both draw and to carry out in real life.
